Replacement License Plate in Nebraska

What is a License Plate Replacement in Nebraska?

Replacement issues one or both license plates outside the regular renewal cycle. The Nebraska Department of Motor Vehicles directs these transactions through your county treasurer’s office for a closed set of triggers: lost, stolen, damaged, faded to illegibility, surrendered after moving from another state, or mismatched to the vehicle class.

  • The replacement fee under Neb. Rev. Stat. § 60-3,157 is $2.50 for plates and stickers, separate from renewal cycle fees. Mandatory fees for each plate and additional charges are added on top, as described in the fee section below.
  • New plate numbers are assigned when replacing standard plates. You surrender the residual plate and receive a new set. Plates with personalized messages retain their text and are ordered with the same combination.
  • Nebraska currently issues two plates for most vehicles under § 60-3,100. Motorcycles, trailers, and tractors receive one. You can replace one plate or the full set; the fee for each plate is adjusted accordingly.

When Do You Need to Replace Your Nebraska License Plate?

The statute requires owners to act promptly. When a plate is lost, damaged, or becomes illegible, § 60-3,157 directs the owner to apply to the county treasurer without delay.

  • Trigger conditions include a missing plate (lost or stolen), physical damage, fading or illegibility, surrendering a plate from another state after moving, and a plate type no longer matching the vehicle class.
  • A police report is not required by statute to process a replacement. If the vehicle itself was reported stolen under § 60-178, the replacement fee is fully waived.
  • Nebraska does not set a specific window in days for replacing a damaged plate. The word “promptly” in § 60-3,157 is the only timeframe.
  • New residents have 30 days after arriving in Nebraska to title and register, according to the Nebraska DMV new residents page. Out-of-state plates must be surrendered at this time.

How to Get a Replacement License Plate in Nebraska

Before visiting the office, gather your current plate number, proof of insurance, and valid driver’s license. Bring the damaged or residual plate if you still have it; replacing standard plates requires surrendering the old plate to issue a new set.

  • In person at your county treasurer’s office: verify identity and ownership, surrender the old plate, and pay the replacement fees. New plates are typically issued on-site from county stock. An updated registration certificate is included in the transaction.
  • By mail: some county treasurers accept replacement requests sent by mail. Include a note with the plate number, payment by check or money order, and proof of insurance. Send to your county’s motor vehicle office. For example, the Douglas County Treasurer notes that additional mailing fees may apply for plates sent by mail.
  • Online: the state eDMV portal does not process plate replacements. The online channel covers only renewals and specialty plate orders. Replacement requires an in-person or mail transaction.

Can You Replace Nebraska License Plate Online?

No. The Nebraska eDMV portal at edmv.nebraska.gov handles registration renewals and specialty plate orders, but not the replacement of lost, stolen, or damaged plates. This transaction must go through your county treasurer’s office in person or by mail.

The portal accepts credit card payments for renewals and specialty plate transactions. Plate replacement is excluded from its menu. There is no workaround to route replacement through the renewal channel.

For in-person service, visit any county treasurer’s office statewide. Douglas County operates five branches in the Omaha metro. The Lancaster County motor vehicle office is located at 625 North 46th Street in Lincoln. Smaller counties have one office in the county seat.

If you need to replace plates, contact your county treasurer; the online portal cannot assist.

How Much is License Plate Replacement in Nebraska?

The base statutory fee is modest, but mandatory additional fees per plate and per transaction raise the check total more than the $2.50 suggests.

  • The replacement fee under § 60-3,157 is $2.50 for plates and stickers (or $1.00 for a registration certificate only).
  • Plate fee of $4.10 per plate applies whenever new, duplicate, or replacement plates are issued (§ 60-3,102). Vehicles with two plates pay $8.20; vehicles with one plate pay $4.10.
  • Mandatory additional fees are added to each registration transaction, including replacement: $0.50 to the Emergency Medical System Fund, $2.00 to the DMV Cash Fund, $1.50 to the State Recreation Road Fund, and $1.50 to the County General Fund (Nebraska DMV fee schedule).
  • The practical total for a two-plate set with new registration is $16.20, according to the Douglas County Treasurer’s fee page. Replacing one plate is $12.10.
  • No fee is charged if the vehicle was reported stolen under § 60-178. Some localities charge additional local fees; confirm with your county treasurer.
